UPDATE: Man dies after accident on Tacoma Tideflats

A truck driver has died after an accident, apparently while he was making a delivery to Simpson Tacoma Kraft Co. on Portland Avenue.

Simpson Tacoma Kraft has released this statement:

There was an accident yesterday afternoon involving a contractor’s driver making a delivery to the mill.  He was transported to a local hospital and we were informed he passed away.

We are shocked and saddened by this accident and extend our deepest sympathies to the driver’s family, loved ones and colleagues.

Simpson Tacoma Kraft employees rendered assistance when they found the driver in distress, and the fire department was also called right away.   We immediately notified the state Department of Labor and Industries and are cooperating fully with their ongoing investigation.  To the best of our knowledge, this accident did not involve Simpson Tacoma Kraft equipment or processes and appears to be a tragic incident with the driver’s vehicle.

We have spoken to our employees and made counseling services available.

The News Tribune has confirmed that the driver worked for Quality Carriers Inc., a subsidiary of Quality Distribution. Both are headquartered in Tampa, Fla. Quality Carriers has an office in Vancouver, where the driver may have been based.

We’re working to confirm the identity of the driver and will post here when we learn more.

UPDATE, 2:48 p.m.: The man who died is Gary Teal, 59. He was from Longview. He died Thursday afternoon at St. Joseph Medical Center, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office. His cause of death has not yet been determined.
