A reportedly drunken driver smashed into the MultiCare building in the 9300 block of Bridgeport Way Saturday night, causing serious damage to the clinic’s urgent care waiting room.

Marcelene Edwards/MultiCare
Lakewood Police spokesman Lt. Chris Lawler said the suspect was an airman assigned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Lawler said the suspect tried to prevent a witness from calling police to the scene. The suspect reportedly is in the custody of military police.

Multicare kept the clinic open Sunday by temporarily moving the urgent care operations to a primary care wing, spokeswoman Marce Edwards said. No one was in the building when the crash took place.

Multicare’s facilities team investigated the damage Sunday. The clinic has not said how it plans to operate for the rest of the week.

“It’s not something we expected today,” she said.

How dang fast was this individual driving?

What the heck? He had to jump two curbs.

  2. guidocarmasi says:

Same people who drive around I-5 near JBLM. It is getting tougher and tougher to drive through the “dumb zone”

  3. ReadNLearn says:

On TV they mentioned that this guy added to his night of career moves by trying to wrestle away the cell phone of someone calling 911.

Anyone know what this fast tracker’s occupational specialty and unit is?

  4. Woodjencut says:

I’m not saying that the guy was smart but to call the JBLM area the dumb zone is not right. Most of the people who drive around there are serving their country or have served it with honor. Maybe since your so smart you should stay out of there.

  5. observations says:

hey stuff happens… we just have to live with it and move on. as for the “dumb zone” comment… tch-tch…. the military is filled with civilians wearing mufti and defending our country, be cool and drop that unwarranted classification

  6. oldmanfmdac says:

Probably a case of “hold my beer and watch this!”.

  7. “..the suspect tried to prevent a witness from calling police to the scene..”

He’s in the custody of the mility police? How is this a Provost matter? It happened off-base. Put this thug into a real jail now.

  8. kirstenfalls says:

Most companies give a break to those who drive less than 7500 miles a year. If you take public transportation instead of driving to work, your premium will go down. Out of the question? Try “Clearance Auto”.

  9. retired80 says:

Off post. No other military involved. Sounds like exclusive jurisdiction of the civil authorities to me.

  10. Tacoma is moving more and more towards a Fayetteville. Get used to it more and more soldiers will be coming

  11. Hey hi how are ya, are you the folks that needed that new entry way? Hey you over there put down that phone there is no reason to call 911, I will just clean this mess up ok? Burp! Hey anyone need a cold one?

  12. TomasUP says:

Hmmm… Guess I’m another (and a US Veteran) who wonders why military authorities rather than Lakewood have custody.

Not on military property, no other military involved, no obvious reason for the civilian authorities to turn a suspected DUI who’s just caused tens of thousands of dollars damage to civilian property over to the MPs…

Anyone have any ideas why he’s not in civilian custody?

  13. To all of you making comments about him being a “thug”, “hold my beer” and all that other crap, YOU HAVE NO IDEA what was even going on with this young man. He’s not going to get any special treatment and he’s not going to get off on anything. Yes he was incredibly stupid and shouldn’t have done this, but there are things that cause people to do what they do. Like no one has ever made a mistake before. And he is incredibly smart, just hasn’t had an ideal life. That’s all I have to say. Keep your stupid comments to yourself.

  14. He wasn’t in the control of the military police… At least not on the Air Force side…
