Take a moment to thank a first responder today, group urges

Today is the second annual “Thank First Responders” Day, a movement that was created after four Lakewood police officers were gunned down inside a Parkland coffee shop two years ago.

“Unfortunately it seems that the community only recognizes the brave and generous acts of our First Responders when tragedy occurs,” a statement on the Thank First Responders website reads. “We shouldn’t need something terrible to happen for us to realize how fortunate we are to have such well trained men and women there for us every single moment of life!”

The idea is for a group of friends, students, coworkers or community members to get together and adopt a police or fire station.

“Make home-made treats, a thank you card, a poster, or something else that shows your appreciation,” according to the “Thank First Responders” website.

More than 60 groups have signed up to participate today.

I responded to this item first. Feel free to thank me.

Do not make home made treats, they will more than likely get thrown away. Think about it… would you eat food from a stranger? If you want to help by donating food items, take them to a food bank or a homeless shelter.

By all means, stop by your local station and show your gratitude, I’m sure the staff would appreciate it.

    Thank you First Responders!

The ones that answer our 911 calls are first responders. Looks like they were forgotten altogether…
