A fire badly damaged a Lacey apartment this evening, according to the Lacey Fire Department.
A neighbor at the Firs apartment complex smelled smoke just before 5:30 p.m. and called 911. Firefighters responded to the unit in the 900 block of Neil Street NE and doused the flames within 10 minutes.
No one was home at the time of the blaze.
Fire investigators said the cause was a mattress placed too closely to a baseboard heater. Damages were estimated at $30,000. Firefighters said there were no working smoke detectors in the apartment.
