A 40-year-old man in a motorized wheelchair was struck and killed Monday afternoon while trying to cross Portland Avenue just outside of Tacoma.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the man’s name.

The man wheeled onto Portland Avenue in the 7900 block about 4 p.m., Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer. He wasn’t in an intersection or crosswalk.

Investigators say the man pulled into the street in front of a Jeep Cherokee and the vehicle hit the man. He was ejected from the wheelchair, Troyer said.

“The driver didn’t see him,” he said.

Paramedics took the man to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

The driver of the Cherokee, a 25-year-old man, remained at the scene. Troyer said speed, alcohol and drugs did not appear to be factors in the deadly accident.

The driver was not arrested or cited at the scene.

The investigation was continuing.

Awful! We need so many curb cuts and crosswalks on the east side it is unfathomable. The east side is always last on the list. I see people using wheelchairs and scooters that have no option but to use the unsafe street.

I hope he had surving next of kin and can sue the city if this was yet another case of city negligence.

Good idea, blame someone else. I have an idea serendipity, you fund raise for cross walks and curbing for the East side. How about that?! Then there won’t be anyone to blame. It’s sad this man died, however, there are other options to get around, they just may not be as convenient.

  5. Make the charges of assault and murder apply to drivers
too. Figure out when “I didn’t see him” really pans out.
