A woman convicted of embezzling more than $1 million from Tacoma Orthopedic Surgeons Inc. was sentenced to seven years in prison this afternoon.

Suzanne Foss, who had been the office manager for Tacoma Orthopedic for more than 25 years, pleaded guilty last month to one count of first-degree theft.

Pierce County prosecutors alleged Foss , 64, was writing checks from the office’s main account to pay off credit card bills from expensive vacations and shopping sprees at Nordstrom.

Bank records went back seven years and showed a loss of more than $ 1 million dollars, charging documents state.

The president of the practice discovered the unauthorized checks last year and reported them to Tacoma police. Officers investigated, and charges were filed in July 2010.

Last year, the eight doctors in the practice, which also operates as Gig Harbor Orthopedic Surgeons and Gig Harbor Ambulatory Surgery Center, won a lawsuit against Foss .

Superior Court Judge Brian Tollefson granted judgments totaling more than $776,590 to the doctors, based on money missing over the past three years, plus fees and interest.

It seems that what happens in cases like this is, the convicted criminal will be out of prison in 3 or 4 years. As for any money being paid back,I feel the Doctors have the proverbial snowballs chances of that happening.I also feel A filing of bankruptsy is in her future. It is too bad the IRS dosen’t get involved and collect taxes on her ill gotten gains. My impression is being bankrupt is no excuse for not paying the IRS.

This just makes us all anticipate the upcoming major mortgage embezzlement case even more.

Note to self: Obtain position of trust. Exploit that trust – over the course of seven years, steal 7 million from those who entrusted money to me – party like a rock a cheap 80’s rock star during this time. Eventually, get caught, Cry, act sad (but mostly bummed that your partying days are over)- then get seven years in a minimum security joint. If you time it right, it will be just about that that time that you need a structured day plan, and no more need for skanky chicks and vegas hotel rooms.

  5. The IRS will go after people like this, not necessarily as fast as the legal system does, but they will be lurking out there. I know, I WAS one of them!
