Two people were injured Wednesday around 10 p.m. on Interstate-5 near Martin Way, when the driver failed to maintain control of the 1997 Saturn they were in and drove off the roadway, striking the cable barrier in the inside median. The car rolled over and came to rest on its top.

Both the driver and the passenger were transported to St. Peters Hospital. The passenger, Oscar Rodriguez-Guevara, 23, has a compound fracture to his left leg and the driver, Luis A. Martinez-Alvarenga, 21, has a fractured spine.

Troopers determined that the driver was impaired and he was arrested for vehicular assault. A blood draw was administered and the driver will be booked into Thurston County Jail when he is released from the hospital.

“We take collisions like this very seriously and this is a perfect example of what can happen when you make the choice to drink and drive,” said Trooper Guy Gill with the Washington State Patrol.

“The cable barrier did exactly what It’s designed to do, it kept Martinez from going into the northbound lanes of I-5. If that would have happened, this would be a different story”.
