UPDATED at 2:10 p.m.

Investigators believe they have pinpointed the source of a fuel spill spotted today on the Foss Waterway.

Investigators suspect the substance came from a private home. The fuel went into the storm drain, which then emptied it into the Foss Waterway, City of Tacoma spokeswoman Lorna Sutton said.

Callers reported a thin sheen from the spill just after 9:45 a.m. The sheen was spotted on the water from the head of the waterway to the 11th Street bridge, the state Department of Ecology reported.

A boom was deployed to contain the spill, the Tacoma Fire Department reported.

Sutton said crews were cleaning out the catch basin.

Is there any truth to the rumor that the source is merely a group of the “Occupy” protesters attempting to bathe in a public fountain?

Where on the Foss Waterway? That’s a large area… so, where, exactly?

The oil spill is coming from the win 96’ers at the south end of the waterway. The spill was spotted around 3 AM this morning and was repeatedly report by marina staff and marina tenants until authorities showed up around 6:30 AM. A boom was deployed at the south end of the waterway early this afternoon. The source of the spill has been located and is in the process of being cleaned up. The stench of oil and fuel is strong all along the waterway.

  4. The source of most contamination on the Foss is the water runoff from the surrounding streets….
