UPDATED at 2:35 p.m.

A young man who spent nine hours in a tree overnight trying to escape a Washington State Patrol trooper was taken for a mental health evaluation Friday.

The man, believed to be in his early 20s, could eventually face charges of felony eluding, obstruction of justice, criminal trespass and making false statements to a public servant for the ordeal, the State Patrol reported.

A trooper had tried to stop a car for speeding on state Route 16 just before 11 p.m. Thursday, trooper Guy Gill said Friday. Initially, the car stopped. Once the trooper got out of his car, however, the car took off again.

Gill said the trooper pursued the car at low speeds into Fircrest. The man jumped out of the car as it was moving and ran.

A police dog found the man a short time later. He had climbed 35 to 40 feet up a cedar tree in a yard on Del Monte Avenue near South 19th Street.

Troopers spent the next nine hours trying to persuade the man to climb down. A negotiator was finally able to get the man to come down shortly before 8 a.m.

The man, who was dressed only in a short-sleeved T-shirt and jeans, was placed into an ambulance and taken from the scene. He was not injured, Gill said.

The man, who was not being forthcoming with troopers about his name, later was transported to Western State Hospital.

  1. He’ll come down sooner or later….leave him there until he comes down on his own…don’t pay all the law enforcement people to watch or try and talk him down…..another stupid person…he is where he belongs….

  2. Impound his car and leave him in the tree.

  3. Birds has it right. I would add that the female he left in the car better tell them who he is or she should be charged as an accessory for whatever he is trying to avoid arrest over.

Once they know who he is, just go to court and get a warrant for him.

Or they could do it the easy way. Just have the fire department use its snorkel truck to make it rain. He’ll be out of his tree soon enough (pun intentional).

    I like pgroups idea.

He was probably doing 28 in a 25 zone. In Fircrest, this is terrifying.

Too bad he came down. Should have left a K9 beneath the tree… waiting.

Probably waiting for his BAC to come down.

I wonder if he thought if he could outwait the cops.

  9. This is always how it starts!!!

Next thing you know he’ll be elected to the Tacoma City Council.

Nothing but a waiting game. Sooner or later he was bound to climb down, or swan dive. Obviously he thought he had a reason to run from the trooper, and this is where he wound up (no pun intended!) Gotta love sheeple!!
