Lakewood’s police chief will honor an Army medic next week after he helped save the life of a woman hit by a truck as she was pumping gas in late July.

Chief Bret Farrar will present Pfc. Jose Delgado with the Citizen Commendation award at Monday’s City Council meeting.

Delgado has been praised for his quick actions July 24 when a distracted driver crashed into Mary Healey’s minivan as she filled up her empty tank at the Union 76 gas station, 10712 Bridgeport Way S.W.

The minivan pinned Healey, 54, against the island holding the gas pumps and nearly severed her foot.

“Delgado pulled into the gas station and immediately took action by organizing several bystanders to help drag her away from the spilling gasoline and render first aid,” a Lakewood police press release stated. “She was bleeding heavily from the damaged leg so Delgado applied a tourniquet and other lifesaving actions.”

Delgado, who was off duty, remained at the scene after Healey was taken to Harborview Medical Center. He provided a statement to investigators and helped identify the suspected hit-and-run driver after he was located.

Delgado, a Pennsylvania native,  is assigned to C Company, 702nd Brigade Support Battalion at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. He’s been in the Army for more than three years. He was deployed from August 2009 to August 2010 for Operation Iraqi Freedom, police reported.
