Several local firefighters set out this morning on a cross-country motorcycle ride to New York City to take part in the events to mark the 10-year anniversary  of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The motorcyclists gathered at Fireman’s Park on Ruston Way, then revved up their engines and took off for New York City. About 40 motorcycles were escorted from the park to Interstate 5 by a Tacoma fire engine, Tacoma fire spokesman Joe Meinecke said.

The motorcyclists include four West Pierce Fire & Rescue firefighters and one Tacoma firefighter.

The riders plan to arrive in New York on Sept. 9 and attend the ceremonies honoring the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. As they ride across the country, they’ll pick up other motorcyclists, Meinecke said.

I wonder how they will be received. Mayor Bloomberg has told all First Responders and Clergy that they will not be welcome at the service!!!
