UPDATED: Man charged with robbing two espresso stands, liquor store in Key Peninsula

Pierce County prosecutors have charged a 46 -year-old man with robbing two espresso stands and a liquor store at gunpoint last week.

Donald A. Lemoine was arraigned in Pierce County Superior Court on three counts of first-degree robbery Monday. Superior Court Judge Ed Murphy ordered Lemoine held in Pierce County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.

Charging documents provide the following information:

A man armed with a black handgun robbed Lacey Latte, 16915 SR 302 KPN, on Wednesday.

UPDATED: Two men shot overnight in Tacoma

UPDATED at 9:30 a.m.

Two men were shot overnight while walking near Wright Park.

A 53-year-old man was struck in the left buttock, while his 27-year-old companion was grazed, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

Both were taken to local hospitals for treatment. The older man’s injuries were not considered life threatening.

The men told Tacoma police they were walking in the 900 block of South Seventh Street about 11:50 p.m. Monday. One man said they were in the area to buy drugs, Fulghum said.

South King firefighters return with WTC artifact today

Just a reminder …

South King Fire & Rescue is planning a ceremony today to welcome a piece of the World Trade Center, which was devastated nearly 10 years ago in terrorist attacks on the East Coast.

The agency was recently awarded an artifact from the towers. South King fire Lt. Scott Mahlen and firefighter Sven Schievink left Aug. 10 on a cross-country trip to pick up the piece and bring it back to Federal Way.

They have been traveling the country and stopping to sightsee after picking up a steel beam from New York City. They’ve been reporting

UPDATED: Man killed in crash on SR 161 near Eatonville

A 55-year-old Graham man was killed early today when he lost control of his truck and smashed into a tree on state Route 161 about three miles north of Eatonville.

The Washington State Patrol reported that Loren D. Dubacher was not wearing a seat belt.

Dubacher was going northbound on SR 161 when he drifted off the roadway near 388th Street East just after 1:40 a.m.

He hit the tree and was killed at the scene. No one else was in the truck, troopers reported.

Craigslist defendant – guilty on all counts

Clabon Terrel Berniard is guilty – six times over.

Berniard, 24, is the last of the four defendants in the Craigslist robbery and murder that led to the death of 43-year-old Edgewood resident Jim Sanders on April 28, 2010. The other three defendants were convicted in separate trials.

Monday’s verdict closed the book. After three days of deliberation, jurors found Berniard guilty of all charges against him: first-degree murder, robbery, assault and burglary. Jurors also found Berniard acted with deliberate cruelty.

Sanders’ widow, Charlene, breathed a deep sigh after the verdict was announced.

UPDATED: 8 arrested, 6 stolen vehicles found at suspected chop shop in Pierce County

UPDATED at 12:30 p.m.

Pierce County sheriff’s deputies have arrested eight people and recovered six stolen vehicles at a suspected chop shop on Canyon Road East.

One of the men arrested has been rushed to the hospital, Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said. Deputies suspect the man took a large amount of methamphetamine before or as they arrived.

Deputies noticed the man getting sick as they were transporting him to jail. They took him to the hospital instead.

“He’s in bad shape,” Troyer said.

Last Craigslist killing defendant convicted on all counts

UPDATE: The jury has convicted Clabon Berniard on all counts.

He’d been charged with first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree robbery, two counts of second-degree assault and one count of first-degree burglary.

Fatal shooting in Tacoma

A young man was shot and killed in Tacoma early this morning at a large party in the 1600 block of Center Street.

According to Tacoma Police, the shooting occurred just after 5 a.m. at a gathering of at least 100 people who had gathered at an empty building for a party after closing time at bars.

Tacoma Police spokesman Mark Fulghum said the victim, aged 17 or 18, was shot at least twice. Attempts at CPR were unsuccessful.
