A young man was shot and killed in Tacoma early this morning at a large party in the 1600 block of Center Street.

According to Tacoma Police, the shooting occurred just after 5 a.m. at a gathering of at least 100 people who had gathered at an empty building for a party after closing time at bars.

Tacoma Police spokesman Mark Fulghum said the victim, aged 17 or 18, was shot at least twice. Attempts at CPR were unsuccessful.

“The victim came to the party to check on somebody who was there and got into an argument with one or more people,” Fulghum said. “As he was leaving, shots were fired.”

Police have so far made no arrests, Fulghum said.

Interviews with witnesses have been continuing since the incident occurred Fulghum said, and they are likely to continue for most of Saturday.

  1. This world has changed horribly. I was a BIG TIME partier in the 70’s & 80’s Never once saw a gun except from a cop.

It’s sad, but doesn’t surprise me one bit. I work nights at a security firm in the city and have a client in that neighborhood. There have been many times on the weekends over the past couple of months I’ve passed by 1600 block of Center Street and seen 150 to 200 cars (no exaggeration) parked up and down the street and on the side streets at 2 am, and people heading up the hill. I’ve even seen people directing traffic where to park with flashlights and bandanas over their faces. There were also people posted at the bottom of the hill at the entrance to the property to act as gatekeepers. There was a lot of planning and forethought put into these “parties.” This was more than just a party. It was probably an illegal nightclub. People would get there at about 1 am and stay until just before sunrise. About a month ago, I called the Tacoma Police Department and alerted them to what was going on, and a few weeks ago there was some police activity in the area. I have also seen gang types in attendance. As sad as it is, it was only a matter of time before this happened. It was an ongoing problem at that location.

Lets keep integrity in place no need for exaggeration, racism nor militant remarks. This action took a life of a young person. Death impacts everyone. Death shows no prejudice of person and or what community it will strike in. Hope the individual(s) that are responsible for the shooting is accountable for his/her actions and the family and other’s involve can get help in recovering from this tragedy.
