Tacoma police detectives  interviewed a woman today who was attacked Tuesday night while jogging in Point Defiance Park but gleaned no clues about the attacker’s identity or motive.

“She doesn’t remember anything past when she lost consciousness,” Tacoma police Mark Fulghum said this afternoon. “She never saw (the attacker).”

The 27-year-old woman was jogging along Five Mile Drive about 6:40 p.m. Tuesday when she heard footsteps. She thought it might be someone running up behind her and didn’t turn around, police said.

She then felt something around her neck and an impact to her body. She blacked out. When she woke up, she was fully clothed and alone on the side of the road, police said.

The woman went to Tacoma General Hospital and called 911. She was treated at the hospital for marks on her neck and bruises on her arms and left side.

Since the woman didn’t see who attacker her, police have no description to release. Detectives do not believe the woman was sexually assaulted or robbed.

“Something happened,” Fulghum said.

Fulghum said attacks such as Tuesday’s are uncommon in Point Defiance Park.

“It’s not a place where we have a lot of problems,” he said.

Most of the complaints regarding the park and Five Mile Drive focus on the drivers, who might be speeding or driving dangerously for the joggers and walkers.

“Most of the complaints we get from the park are traffic related,” Fulghum said.

Patrol officers have been notified of the attack. They are going through the area as time allows during their shifts, Fulghum said.

Investigators ask anyone who saw the attack or anyone suspicious in the park Tuesday night to call the department at 253-798-4721 or Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers at 253-591-5959.

Something happened .Please report information when we find out what something happened.

  3. Sticky, you must not get out much. At this time of year, 6:40 pm is still hours before sunset. Not that it should make difference, there is no reason to blame the victim.

What is going on at the park? Fires, now joggers being attacked! Oh yeah, the raccoons also. I’m available If the city needs extra patrols, I could use the target practice.

Actually, Sticky, it wasn’t “night” and there are still plenty of people in the park long after 6 in the evening. Also, nowhere in the story does it say she was “running around the woods”. It says she was jogging 5 mile drive, which would suggest that she was on the side of the road and not on a wooded trail. Finally, no one should look at a victim and tell them they should’ve known better. Instead we should be looking at perpetrators of violence and telling THEM they should’ve known better. You wouldn’t chastise a burglary victim for having nice things that a burglar would want to take, and you probably wouldn’t have made such a comment if the victim had been male.

Your comment makes you seem more slimy than sticky.
