A three-alarm fire at a Des Moines-area apartment complex is sending a giant plume of black smoke over the South Sound.

The fire broke out at the Lighthouse apartment building in the 9800 block of Des Moines Memorial Drive South. A nonprofit group, Union Gospel Mission, owns the four-story units for low-income people.

About 30 people were evacuated from the building. No major injuries have been reported.

The News Tribune has received reports from people who can see the smoke from Ruston Way and from Seattle.
