A 25-year-old Kent man accused of fatally shooting his 16-year-old Enumclaw girlfriend was charged with first-degree manslaughter today.
James Radtke accidentally shot Kelsey Carter while she was sitting on his lap Dec. 11, according to charging documents.
Radtke and another man in the Ravensdale home drove Carter to the Enumclaw hospital, where she died soon after.
King County sheriff’s deputies had gone to the house earlier that night after Carter’s mother called 911 to say she had seen her daughter standing on the porch smoking a cigarette.
Carter’s mother had reported her as a runaway several weeks before.
Radtke told responding deputies that Carter babysat his young children and was not his girlfriend, and denied that she was inside the home, documents state.
After the shooting, he admitted to detectives that he had met Carter five months before she died and they had been involved in a sexual relationship.
The pair had been living with friends or at his parent’s house, documents state.
Radtke is being held on $100,000 bail, King County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Dan Donohoe said. He is scheduled to be arraigned Aug. 4 at Norm Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent.
