UPDATED at 8:15 a.m.
A man was killed early today after his four-door sedan went off state Route 165 in Buckley and crashed into a power pole, the Washington State Patrol reported.
The crash occurred just after 2 a.m. at SR 165 and 128th Street East.
The driver had been going north on SR 165 when he failed to negotiate a curve, went off the road and hit the pole. The car burst into flames, troopers reported.
East Pierce Fire & Rescue firefighters doused the flames on the car and the 80-foot power pole, the agency reported.
The driver, who was the only person in the car at the time, died at the scene.
The crash initially blocked both directions of SR 165, prompting traffic to be diverted for four hours. The roadway was reopened about 6 a.m.
Homes in the immediately area had their power disrupted. East Pierce Fire reported that there was no widespread outage, however.
The identity of the driver has not yet been confirmed or released. The State Patrol reports the car was totaled and towed from the scene.
Troopers were investigating the cause of the deadly accident. They noted that it was too early to say whether drugs or alcohol played a factor.
