UPDATED: Convicted Tacoma Mall shooter involved in deadly attempted prison break

The Tacoma man convicted in a 2005 shooting spree at the Tacoma Mall was involved in a deadly attempted prison break this morning at Clallam Bay Corrections Center, the state Department of Corrections reports.

The agency says Dominick S. Maldonado used scissors to take a corrections officer hostage in the industries area of the prison just after 10 a.m.

Around the same time, fellow inmate Kevin Newland drove a forklift through the doors of the work area and into the perimeter fences. A correctional officer fired one shot and killed the 25-year-old Newland, the department reported.

Tacoma police nab burglar who allegedly broke into Lincoln High

Tacoma police arrested a man suspected of breaking into Lincoln High School early today.

Officers and school patrol officers were called to the school at 701 S. 37th St. about 4:25 a.m. for a burglary-in-progress, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

The officers spotted someone in the school. The man ran from the building and was met by officers. He failed to comply with the officers’ orders and was stunned with a Taser, Fulghum said.

The man was then taken into custody on burglary charges.

Four caught after trying to steal metal from bridge construction site, Tacoma police say

Tacoma police arrested four men early today after finding them allegedly trying to steal metal from the Murray Morgan Bridge construction project.

The officers were called to the 11th Street bridge some time after midnight. When they arrived, they spotted the four men in the construction area of the bridge. The area is fenced off with security wire and locked gates, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum noted.

The men were observed trying to steal metal from the site, police said.

Officers called the Tacoma Fire Department to help in getting the men out of the secured area, Fulghum said.

Flames destroy stolen car at Tacoma apartment complex

Tacoma police and firefighters were called to the Spanish Hills apartments on South 12th Street late Tuesday for a car that was on fire.

Flames destroyed the car, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

Officers discovered the car had been stolen earlier in the day within the City of Tacoma.

No injuries were reported.




Man charged in Spanaway-area mobile home park shooting

Pierce County prosecutors today charged a 29-year-old man in connection with Monday’s shooting at a Spanaway-area mobile home park.

Shan Lee Rasha is charged with first-degree assault, first-degree attempted robbery and second-degree being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Sheriff’s deputies were called just before 10 a.m. Monday to a mobile home park in the 3000 block of 232nd Street East.

They said a woman in a green car drove by several times before Rasha got out and walked toward the victim carrying a shotgun covered with a blanket.

ALL CLEAR: WSP at scene of an incident involving a pedestrian on SR 512

Washington State Patrol troopers are investigating an incident involving a pedestrian in the eastbound lanes of state Route 512 this morning.

Trooper Guy Gill reports that a 54-year-old man came from the Pacific Avenue overpass onto the shoulder of the SR 512 on-ramp.

The roadway is not blocked by the investigation.

UPDATE: The incident has been cleared.


Pierce County deputies searching for kidnapped woman

Pierce County sheriff’s deputies are searching for a 26-year-old woman believed to be kidnapped Friday from a Midland-area home.

Witnesses reported seeing Sophia Lozier and her boyfriend arguing in the driveway of a home in the 7500 block of Golden Given Road East just before noon Friday.

The boyfriend allegedly fired a shot at Lozier before forcing her into his vehicle and driving away.

The News Tribune is not naming him because he hasn’t been charged with a crime.

The two are associated with the Native Gangster Crips gang, investigators said.

Deputies described the boyfriend as a 24-year-old Pacific Islander,
