UPDATE 2: Power has been restored, Tacoma Power spokeswoman Nora Doyle said. The zoo reports that it is up and running.

UPDATE: Electricity is out in about 450 homes as well as Point Defiance Zoo this morning after a couple of mylar balloons got caught between two power lines, Tacoma Power reports.

The power could be out for another couple of hours, utilities spokeswoman Nora Doyle said shortly after 8:30 a.m.

Utilities crews believe mylar balloons got trapped between two power lines. The metal in the balloons can melt the wire in the power lines, Doyle said.

The power went out about 3:30 a.m. Initially, 1,540 customers were without electricity, Doyle said.

More than half of the customers have had their power restored. Those still without power are in the area of North 45th Street as well as Salmon Beach, Point Defiance Zoo and the Tacoma Yacht Club.
