The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has released the identities and causes of death for the mother and son who were found dead inside her North End Tacoma home earlier this week.

The office has determined that Jacqueline Hensler, 55, died of multiple stab wounds. Her death was ruled a homicide.

She was found dead along with her son, 18-year-old Ryan Simms. He died of asphyxiation after placing a plastic bag over his head. His death was ruled a suicide.

Tacoma police found the two Wednesday afternoon inside Hensler’s house in the 3900 block of North 30th Street. Hensler’s coworkers at Good Samaritan Hospital grew concerned about her after she hadn’t shown up for work for several days and asked police to check on her.

Simms had been attending college in England and recently returned home.

Tacoma police continue to look for a motive to the homicide-suicide. There was no suicide note found, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

horrible…working for goodsam and seeing the devistation this has cause…..unbelievable.

  3. How sad and tragic. There had to be some undiagnosed and untreated mental health issues with the son.

    my heart is heavy today.

  5. I knew Ryan when he was just as little boy!! This is a very sad ending to a mother who gave her all to make sure that he had everything that he needed! All I can say is WOW!! :(

  6. fanciladi says:

Yes, I agree, this is VERY SAD, indeed!

  7. che_von says:

I am wondering why they are ruling it a homicide/suicide, when a suicide note was not found… Could it be a double homicide?
Either way, it is a sad day indeed.

  8. acts of a deranged mind. also plastic bags are dangerous.

My question is did this mother ask for help from the so called mental health professionals who claim to be helping and advocating for the mentally ill? The mental health industry in this state has alot to be desired. Don’t give me this garbage that the counselors and professionals are overwhelmed with work.

  10. This is so sad and strange. And still hard to believe.
If the son was capable enough to attend school in England – and both mother and son seemed to be leading productive lives – what could possibly lead to a homicide-suicide?
I understand we are not entitled to more details till the next of kin can be informed and till the police know more.
I don’t understand how anyone could suffocate themselves with a plastic bag?
Wouldn’t human reflexes make one tear the plastic bag open when gasping for air?
I just pray and hope there isn’t some lunatic in the neighborhood still running loose after making this look like a homicide-suicide.

mental illness is devastating to a family and it looks like this mother went it alone, if you are in this situation seek help tell neighbors family ect.

  12. ka5je2003 says:

For me to believe that Ryan killed his mother, the coroner will need to state that beyond a reasonable doubt, her wounds were not self inflicted. Tragedy stalked that woman. Life is so unfair….

  13. bullman120 says:

if you are looking to the police for answers, i am sure this case is already closed.

  14. sadintacoma says:

This mother loved her son more than anything,he was her life. She had gone thru so many tragedies already…this is just devastating. I hope the inlaws from England will hold a service—she was loved by many, and will be so missed. May she rest in peace with her husband and mother.
