The Puyallup Police Association has set up a memorial fund to help pay funeral costs for a 2-year-old boy who died Friday after being swept into the Greenwater River during a family camping trip.
Donations may be made at any Chase Bank branch to The Grant Hayes Memorial Donation Account. The police association has contributed $1,000.
Grant’s mom, Gina Hayes, is a police officer in Puyallup. His father, Jeff Hayes, works for another law enforcement agency.
They “deeply appreciate all of the support and prayers that have been extended,” according to a department news release.
The Hayes are honoring their son’s short life by donating his corneas and heart valves through the organ donation program.
A memorial service is planned for Friday. It is closed to the public.
Grant was with his mother and a family friend at a campsite along the river east of Enumclaw when the boy somehow fell in the raging waters. Gina Hayes rushed to a fire station to call for help because there is no cell phone service in the area.
A search party began looking for the boy. Jeff Hayes found his son downstream from the campground.
