Second Craigslist defendant sentenced to long prison term

A Pierce County judge this afternoon sentenced Amanda Knight to more than 71 years in prison for her role in the death of an Edgewood father gunned down in his home last year.

A jury convicted Knight, 22, last month of six crimes, including first-degree murder, in the April 2010 death of James Sanders.

Prosecutors argued Knight set up a robbery by calling Sanders regarding a ring he’d advertised on Craigslist. She and codefendant Kiyoshi Higashi later went to Sanders home under the pretense of buying the ring.

Once inside, Higashi pulled out a gun, and he and Knight tied up Sanders and his wife, Charlene. Knight then signaled two men waiting in a car outside to enter the home.

James and Charlene Sanders were beaten and threatened and one of their sons pistol-whipped before James Sanders broke free of his bonds and began to fight back. Prosecutors contended Higashi then shot him to death.

A different jury earlier this year convicted Higashi of first-degree murder and other crimes. He’s serving a 124-year sentence.

The other defendants in the case, Joshua Reese and Clabon Berniard, await trial.

Sounds about right. She will either die in prison or be released as an elderly woman. Either way, she’s going to pay for her crime — assuming this sentence stands as I hope it does. Someone said she’s mixed up and needs counsel. I suspect that’s true of almost everyone in prison. But the counsel is something she can get in prison. Maybe she can come to really understand what she’s done. And then she can continue to serve her sentence and accept her well-deserved punishment.

If she’s so “mixed up” she didn’t know robbery was a bad thing, God help us all if she’s set free.

wow finally a halfway decent sentence

If ugliness was a crime, should would have already been incarcerated.
