The public is invited to a “Cop Cars and Coffee Event” Saturday at the Parkland Forza Coffee shop.

The event is being held in conjunction with the start of National Police Week, which honors and remembers law enforcement officers who’ve been killed in the line of duty.

Restored emergency vehicles and in-service vehicles will be set up at the Forza shop in Parkland, 11401 Steele St. S., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, a press release states. In addition, Special Olympics will have a dunk tank for “Dunk a Cop” to raise money for the organization.

From noon to 12:01 p.m. there will be a tribute to the officers who have been killed in the line of duty in Washington. Among them are Lakewood police Sgt. Mark Renninger and officers Tina Griswold, Greg Richards and Ronald Owens, all of whom were gunned down the morning of Nov. 29, 2009, inside the Parkland coffee shop.

“At that time and for that one minute instead of a moment of silence participants at the event will sound their sirens and turn on their emergency lights,” the press release states.

An awards ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. The participants will receive either a certificate of participation or one of 18 plaques.

This is the first year for the event, which is sponsored by the Emergency Vehicle Owner Operators Association and the Forza Coffee Co. Proceeds from raffle drawings during the event will benefit the Behind the Badge Foundationthe Special Olympics.
