Prosecutor: Lakewood officers justified in shooting armed woman

Three Lakewood police officers were justified in shooting a woman who pointed what appeared to be a semiautomatic pistol at one of them earlier this year, the Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office reported today.

Carolyn Moran-Hernandez, 47, died Feb. 14 after confronting Sgt. Michael Noel and officers Matthew Brown and Darrin Latimer as they responded to a domestic-violence.

A woman called 911 to report that Moran-Hernandez had assaulted her and was armed with a knife, according to a news release. Police arrived in the 3200 block of 83rd Street South to find Moran-Hernandez on the front porch of a house.

She yelled obscenities at the officers and told them to shoot her before going into the house and coming back out with a black handgun, which she then pointed at Brown, the news release states.

The three officers opened fire, killing her. Investigators later discovered the pistol was a BB gun manufactured to look like a real firearm.

“This appears to be a case where the deceased committed ‘suicide-by-cop,’” Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said in the news release. “She forced the officers to shoot by point a gun at one of the officers.”

  1. Three officers. One woman. I’d say these policemen need some serious training in confrontational techniques. Why didn’t they use a Taser first or some other form of restraint? Is there no negotiator on staff? The “cover” story is a litle hard to believe.

Olemag, go back to your fantasy TV shows. You have no idea what you’re talking about. This is the real world, you obviously are not living in it.

Olemag , I have to agree with everything above . You have no idea , you were not there and I doubt you have ever had a gun pointed at you . If you had a gun pointed at you and you were in uniform it would have been automatic for you as an to fire . You don’t wait for the person who appears to have a gun to fire first.

  4. Reply to Everything Alaska and Steve Allison:: Read the report again. “She went back into the house….” Does this not indicate that there was time to subdue her or make a plan to capture her alive? Yes, I have had a gun pointed at me. It is not supposed to be an automatic reflex for a law enforcement agent to fire to kill. Why she shot in the arm by one officer instead of being blown apart by all three. Overkill is an understatement. Trigger Happy fits better.

Olemag, I say it again. You have no clue to what you are saying. You have no experience or education to back up your statement. You only make uneducated opinion. I have 26 years on the job. 7 of those as a WA. State Criminal Justice Academy Trained Firearms Instructor. Lakewood PD Officers performed exactly as they were trained. You Olemag, are full of it.

you send more than one officer routinely and you try to resolve things using minimal force. If we can believe everything we read here the lady went back in the house and came out with what looked like a gun and pointed it at officers. At that point training takes over and training is to stop the threat in order to save lives , perhaps a neighbors or yours that might have caught a stray bullet or richocet. You never shoot to wing someone , you might miss , you aim for the biggest part of the body and you shoot to stop the threat to you and innocents citizens nearby. The lady made a bad decision and forced officers to stop her from making the situation even worse . All this probably happened so fast it would make all our heads spin ( except who ever might have been killed if it had been a real gun , that person would not care anymore but their family probably would have , a lot ). You just never know and I wasn’t there .
