A Kent police officer shot and killed a man armed with a long gun this morning at the Kent Transit Center.

The man, a 58-year-old Kent resident, died at the scene, said Cathy Schrock, Federal Way police spokeswoman. The Federal Way Police Department is investigating the deadly shooting.

Meanwhile, two Kent officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure when officers fire their weapons. One officer is a three-year veteran of the department; the other is a six-year veteran. Their names have not been released.

The man had been in a Far West cab for some time this morning. The cab driver had noticed the man was armed with a long gun, Schrock said.

The driver became concerned and stopped at 301 N. Railroad Ave. He got out of the cab and called 911 at 9:10 a.m., Schrock said.  The passenger did not know the driver was calling 911.

By the time two Kent officers arrived three minutes later, the man was out of the cab. The officers ordered him to drop the weapon.

“He started to draw this weapon out, not obviously listening to verbal commands,” Schrock said.

One Kent officer fired at the man, killing him.

No one else was injured.

The investigation into the shooting will be forwarded to the King County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

  4. Why do they put up this BS that they’re investigating themselves. It’s a waste of time and money plus you already know what the outcome will be.
