The law enforcement community is preparing to honor their fallen officers with two events this week.
The annual Pierce County Law Enforcement Memorial Service will be held Thursday. The ceremony begins at 6 p.m. in the Sharon McGavick Student Center at Clover Park Technical College, 4500 Steilacoom Blvd. S.W., in Lakewood.
The event remembers the law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in Pierce County.
On Friday, the state will recognize officers who’ve been killed while on duty or who have distinguished themselves by exceptional meritorious conduct.
The Law Enforcement Medal of Honor-Peace Officers Memorial Combined Ceremony is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at the Law Enforcement Memorial Site on the state Capitol Campus in Olympia.
A reception will follow.
Next week is National Police Week, an annual event that brings thousands of law enforcement officers, survivors of slain officers and supporters to Washington, D.C.
A candlelight vigil at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial will be held May 13. The National Peace Officer’s Memorial Service will be held May 15 at the United States Capitol.
Last year, the names of four Lakewood police officers, a Pierce County sheriff’s deputy and a Seattle police officer were among those added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
