A group of kids found a young man dead Thursday night in Lakewood’s Wards Lake Park. Now, Lakewood investigators are working to identify the homicide victim and who might have killed him.

Detectives returned to the park at 2716 84th St. S. this morning but didn’t find any additional evidence, Lakewood police Lt. Dave Guttu said.

“It’s a who dunnit and who is he,” Guttu said Friday morning.

Officers were called about 10:40 p.m. Thursday after neighbors heard what they believed were gunshots in the area of the park. About five minutes later, a group of kids discovered the dead man in the playground area of the 20-acre park, Guttu said.

The kids told officers they hadn’t seen anyone else in the park. Officers didn’t find anyone else either, Guttu said.

The dead man is Hispanic and in his 20s to 30s. He didn’t have any identification on him.

Investigators said there were no signs of a big struggle and suspect he might have either met somebody at the park or went there with someone he knew, Guttu said.

However, they didn’t have any suspects or motives for the slaying.

Investigators suspectthe slaying is related to the shots fired call. Officers canvassed the surrounding neighborhood but didn’t find any witnesses to the shooting, Guttu said.

Officers were posted at the crime scene overnight so a more-thorough search could be conducted today.
