UPDATE: The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the pair killed Monday night when their truck hit a utility pole near Graham as 41-year-old Michelle Anderson and 42-year-old Eugene Quillin.
INITIAL POST: A man and woman died Monday evening when the truck they were in struck a light pole on Mountain Highway East and 260th Street East, the Washington State Patrol reports.
The driver of the pickup, a 42-year man from Spanaway, and his passenger, a 41-year-old woman from Ashford, died at the scene, the state patrol said.
The impact to the pole was so intense that it moved the cement foundation of the light pole and cracked the asphalt for 7 feet at the edge of the asphalt, the state patrol reported. The light on the light pole crashed down onto the shoulder.
Investigators said the driver and passenger were wearing seatbelts.
Witnesses told investigators at the scene the 1982 Chevrolet pickup truck that was traveling north on Mountain Highway East ran the red light at 260th Street East. A vehicle that southbound on Mountain Highway was turning turning left, on a green arrow, to 260th Street East.
The pickup tried to steer around the vehicle that was turning left and drove off the roadway colliding with the light pole, according to the state patrol.
The names of the two people who died were being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
