The State Patrol says a collision that caused miles of traffic backup on Interstate 5 near DuPont during rush-hour tonight and injured three people was caused by a driver changing lanes into another vehicle.
A 49-year-old Lacey man merged from the onramp near Center Drive and changed lanes into a Honda Civic driven by a 28-year-old Seattle woman.
The Honda spun into another lane and was struck by a Chrysler Sebring, which then hit the barrier and rolled over.
The Lacey man was driving on a suspended license and made an unsafe lane change, according to the State Patrol.
The accident, which occurred about 6:30 p.m., caused more than five miles of traffic backup on I-5.
Just a few things to note: the wreck occured more around 5:30pm. It had already occured when i got on the freeway from center drive going north at 5:45pm. Police and EMTs were still arriving at that time. And this is on top of the 10 or so cop cars and 5 firetruck/ambulances that were already on the scene. Also, it occured on the southbound lanes. I noticed Stacia did not note the direction. I hope all involved are able to make a full recovery and I hope the guy responsible is somehow punished.
Having lived here, there and everywhere, I can say with authority that the crappiest drivers are in Washington state! In a nutshell, they’re so wrapped up in themselves, arrogance and perceived invincibility in their SUVs yakking on their cell phones that they can’t be bothered to tend to road safety.
Or they’re drunk or high on drugs.
I past this crash last night, and about 3 seconds later, we saw a police car escorting an additional ambulance to the crash with “NEONATAL TRANSPORT UNIT” written on the side – both were Code 3….does anyone know anything about this?
The second I saw that ^ ambulance, my heart hit my stomach, I felt like throwing up and just broke into tears – the thought of a baby in that accident….omg….
Does anyone know anything about this?
