An Orting man who died Sunday morning while trying to save his elderly mother from their burning home was identified today as 46-year-old Shane York.

After York realized their home in the 17900 block of Pioneer Way East (Highway 162) was ablaze about 7 a.m., he ran outside to alert neighbors and then returned to the burning house in an effort to rescue his mom.

Neighbors found and saved the woman but York died in the blaze.

The cause of the fire was electrical.

York apparently moved an electric hospital bed for his mother into the living room Saturday.

“He was tinkering with it, trying to get it to work,” said Paul Webb, interim Fire Chief for Orting Valley Fire and Rescue. “They determined that was the source of the fire.”

  1. This story is so so sad. :((( What a wonderful son Shane was. Breaks my heart, so wish he would have made it out too, what a sacrifice he made.

    RIP Shane:
I remember when you used to be a real good man but you see what meth has done to your life and now your mom don’t even have a home anymore…
I truly hope she is ok and that your brother helps her …

Gillis, your comment is inaccurate, insensitive and inappropriate. Shane won’t get your message, but sadly the teenage daughter he left behind may. (And he didn’t have a brother).

  4. seattlephile, Shane did have a brother who lived close by, I am the one, ask his mom or dad if you think this is not true. I agree that the comment from Gillis is very inappropriate. Shane had a big heart and tried to help alot of people but he never seemed to get the same in return. May you rest in peace my brother, I will miss you so much

This is regarding a man I knew, and very much appreciated! We saw very ‘eye to eye’. I am VERY sad to learn of his passing, even though we had drifted apart, due to geographic differences, though not philosophical differences! I was interested to get back in contact with Shane, and began looking for him, when I came across his obituary! Knowing Shane York, as I knew him, I would have expected no less, of a sacrificial effort upon his part! Definitely ‘one of the good guys’ is no longer walking on the Earth!
