A 47-year-old man died this morning after going back into a burning home to try and rescue his elderly mother, according to Orting Valley Fire and Rescue.

The blaze broke out just after 7 a.m. at a single-story house in the 17900 block of Pioneer Way East (Highway 162).

Neighbors and passersby rescued the woman, who is believed to be in her late 70s or early 80s. She was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup. Her condition is unknown.

“It looks like her son had left the house, alerted neighbors of the fire and then went back in to get his mother out,” said interim Fire Chief Paul Webb. “He perished in the fire.”

It took 21 firefighters to knock down the flames. The house is a total loss.

The cause is being investigated.
