UPDATED: Snow cancels after-school activities

UPDATE, 3:15 p.m.

Tacoma Community College: Evening classes at all locations are canceled.

UPDATE, 2:43 p.m.

Orting School District: Afternoon and evening activities canceled.

South Puget Sound Community College: Evening classes at the Olympia campus and the Hawks Prairie Center are canceled. No classes after 5 p.m.

UPDATE, 1:23 p.m.:

Tacoma Public Schools: All after-school activities are canceled today for elementary and middle school students. For high school students, after-school activities will end at 4:30 p.m. Otherwise, schools will dismiss at their regular time today, and buses will operate on their normal routes.

UPDATE, 1:32 p.m.:

Bates Technical College will close at 3 p.m. today. All evening classes canceled.

Bethel School District: After-school and evening activities canceled.

Federal Way School District: All after school and evening activities canceled.

Chief Leschi Schools: Two hours late Thursday Feb. 24.

UPDATE, 11:45 a.m.:

UW Tacoma evening classes and events starting at 4:30 p.m. or later today are canceled. Campus reopens at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Initial post:

As of 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, only one South Sound schools has reported any weather-related closures. However, a couple have reported changes to school bus routes, and one college has a late start.

The North Thurston School District says its buses will operate on snow routes this morning and this afternoon.

The Steilacoom School District reports Chloe Clark Elementary School in DuPont is closed. There will be no afternoon preschool programs, no afternoon student activities. Afternoon snow routes excluding Hoffman Hill in DuPont will operate on snow routes.

Everest College-Tacoma: Early morning classes – those starting between 6 and 10 a.m. – are running two hours late. All other classes are on schedule.

Tumwater School District reports that its buses will operate on snow routes.

    Take a look out your window. Districts do have access to weather forecasts and radar, too.

    The temperatures are dropping. The roads will be very slick this evening.

    So it’s really not necessary to hold a class that can be shifted to another day when the roads are in a better condition.

    At any rate, the schools are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. If someone gets hurt, folks will demand a scalping party. If I was making the decision, I would error on over caution.
