Car hits power pole at high rate of speed

An 18 year-old Olympia man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with life-threatening injuries after being involved in a collision in the east Olympia area early this morning.

He was driving a 1992 Acura Integra southbound on Spurgeon Creek Road in the 7800 block when he failed to maintain control of his vehicle, left the roadway and struck a utility pole just after midnight.

Washington State Patrol investigators said the driver appeared to be driving under the influence and too fast.

An 18 year-old passenger in the vehicle received minor injuries.

It took medical personnel approximately 15 minutes to extricate the driver from his car.
