A smoke alarm is credited with helping a man escape a fire Monday evening at his Bonney Lake home.

The manufactured home in the 20600 block of La Paloma Drive suffered significant damage, said Dina Sutherland, spokeswoman for East Pierce Fire & Rescue. Fire crews were still tending to hot spots and investigators hadn’t been able to get inside the home as of Monday night, she said.

The homeowner was alone when the alarm went off, and he got out when he saw smoke and flames, Sutherland said. He went to the home of a neighbor, who called 911, she said.

The homeowner was not injured. The Red Cross was arranging for his housing, and some family members were with the man at the scene Monday night, Sutherland said.
