UPDATE: The Pierce County Medical Examiner has identified the dead man as Lenard Masten, 39.

PREVIOUS POST: An apparent confrontation on a Lakewood street Sunday evening led to the city’s first homicide of 2011.

Police aren’t releasing much information.

Lt. Chris Lawler said in a news release issued this afternoon that officers responded to a call of shots fired with a man down in the 5500 block of Chicago Avenue Southwest about 8:35 p.m.

They found a man suffering from a gunshot wound  lying on the sidewalk of an apartment complex, Lawler said. He was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Tacoma where he died.

Witnesses told police the man was approached by two men shortly before gunshots rang out.

Detectives are interviewing people and following leads today, Lawler said.

Lakewood went all of 2010 without a homicide.

Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward for information that leads to the shooter being arrested and convicted. Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 253-591-5959. Tips also can be provided at 253-830-5042.
