A 38-year-old Renton man was killed this morning on State route 410 near Greenwater, the Washington State Patrol reports.

He was driving eastbound on the highway in his 2001 Ford Explorer when he drove into the westbound lane in an attempt to pass another car. He lost control of the car which went off the highway to the right and struck a tree, the State Patrol said.

The identity of the driver wasn’t released pending notification of next of kin. The driver was using a seatbelt and alcohol was not a factor in the crash, according to the State Patrol.

The road was bare and wet with slush in places.  The collision is still under investigation but speed too fast for conditions is a major factor, the State Patrol said.

The crash occurred about 8:25 a.m. just east of milepost 45.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
