Overnight hail made for slippery streets this morning

Main arterial and heavily traveled roads are clearing up quickly this morning but neighborhood streets can still be sheets of ice.


The watchword: take it easy.

Pierce County reports it was able to treat its arterial system with anti-icer. Here is the county’s morning report:


We were able to get all 1,500 lanes miles of our arterial system treated
overnight with a solid anti-icer, a mixture of 75 percent salt 25 percent sand.

Expect slick roads during this morning’s commute

Cars were sliding into ditches and each other all over Pierce County late Wednesday as wet roads turned icy when temperatures plummeted into the 20s.

Three Lakewood patrol cars were involved in minor weather-related wrecks, Lt. Chris Lawler reported Wednesday night. No one was injured in those collisions.

Be careful out there.

Man driving stolen car that split in two charged with robbery, eluding

Pierce County prosecutors today charged a 49-year-old man with robbery, attempting to elude a police and driving with a suspended license for allegedly stealing a car that he later wrecked in spectacular fashion.

A not guilty plea was entered on behalf of Michael Allen Mertz in Superior Court. Commissioner Patrick Oishi ordered Mertz jailed in lieu of $250,000.

Prosecutors allege Mertz stole a 1993 Honda Accord from a Lakewood man at knifepoint Tuesday  then led police on a high-speed chase that ended when the car slammed into a tree and split in two.

Cold but dry weather for New Year’s weekend

Forecasters are calling for colder temperatures but dry conditions as we head into the News Year’s weekend.

It should be mostly sunny in the Tacoma area Thursday with high temperatures in the upper 30s, according to the National Weather Service office in Seattle. Lows will drop into the 20s overnight.

Similar weather is on tap through Saturday.

It will warm up a bit Sunday, with highs in the 40s, before clouds move in Sunday night.

The first work week of 2011 calls for rain.

Fatal hit and run might have been a tragic accident

Auburn police believe the woman who was hit and killed Christmas Day night on Auburn Way South might have been lying in the street when she was hit and probably killed by a passing vehicle.

“We don’t think it was a fatal hit and run,” Auburn Police Cmdr. Jamie Sidell said Wednesday.

The victim was identified as 27-year-old Sheena Watchman who had no known address in the area, police said.

He said an 18-year-old woman contacted police earlier this week to say she recalled perhaps hitting something in the 1200 block of  Auburn Way

Tacoma responds to fire in the Fife Business Park

UPDATE: Firefighters found the fire in the roof and extinguished it after tearing into the roof of the building. Cause of the fire is under investigation.

Tacoma fire units have responded to a roof fire in the Fife business Park on Pacific Highway East.

Deputy Chief Jolene Davis said a report of the odor of smoke in the  building at 5113 Pacific Highway East and black smoke coming from the roof came in about 8:50 a.m. A full commercial response was mounted.

Driver killed in Federal Way intersection when car runs red light

Federal Way police said a 21-year-old man was killed after another driver ran a red light in Federal Way early Wednesday.

Lt. John Stieben said the victim died at the scene. He was driving westbound through the intersection of South 320th Street and Pacific Highway South at about 2:30 a.m.

A Chevrolet Suburban that was northbound on Pacific Highway South t-boned the Honda on the driver’s side, he said.

Stieben said witnesses told police  the Suburban drove through the red light. A check of the city’s  traffic camera installed at the intersection confirmed the Suburban ran through the red light.

Bullets hit house in drive-by shooting

A house was hit by bullets in a  drive-by shooting  on South Puget Sound Ave. early this morning, Tacoma police report.

Neighbors heard shots fired about 3 a.m. and residents at 6636 S. Puget Sound Ave., said bullets hit their house. When police arrived they found bullet casings in the street and bullets  embedded in the house. No one was hurt.

Police are investigating.
