Tacoma police are searching for a man who robbed a West End grocery store clerk at gunpoint this afternoon.

The robbery occurred inside the Safeway at 2637 N. Pearl St. about 12:45 p.m., police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. A man wielding a black handgun robbed the clerk, taking cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The robber left the store. He’s described as black, in his 20s and about 5 feet 8 with a medium to heavy build, Fulghum said. He wore a black jacket, black shirt and dark-colored jeans.

Officers are in the area, searching for the robber. Nearby Wilson High School was in a brief modified lockdown as a safety precaution. The lockdown was recently lifted, the school district reported.
