Tacoma police are investigating the shooting death of a 20-year-old man who was found in his South End apartment Tuesday afternoon during a welfare check.

Investigators have no suspects and no motive for the homicide, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has not released the man’s name.

The man and a woman he’s related to live in the apartment in the 7300 block of South Wilkeson Street. Family members went to the apartment Tuesday afternoon to check on the woman, Fulghum said.

The woman finally answered the door. She was OK but as family members looked around, they found the 20-year-old man dead, Fulghum said.

The relatives called police about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. Investigators believe the man had been dead for some time.

Homicide detectives and forensics specialists were called to the scene and launched an investigation. They talked to the man’s family members and neighbors, Fulghum said.

“Neighbors reported that they had not seen anyone at the apartment since Sunday,” Fulghum said.

Detectives talked to the woman who lives in the apartment and do not believe she’s a suspect in the slaying, Fulghum said.

“The investigation is ongoing,” he said.
