Sheriff’s detectives are searching for a man they believe has shot and wounded three people over the past two nights in unincorporated Pierce County.

The state Department of Corrections has issued a warrant for 28-year-old Stephen Young’s arrest. Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said Young should be considered dangerous.

All the victims are expected to survive their injuries, Troyer said today. Investigators believe Young and the victims are part of a larger group that is involved in drugs.

“The reasons why these people were shot were minimal,” Troyer said. “We do know there are drugs involved with everyone involved, either on the using, buying or selling end of it.”

The first shooting occurred early Thursday. Two woman drove themselves to St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood after one had been shot. Their car also had been shot several times.

The women were not cooperative with police. However, investigators were able to figure out that the women were shot in the car about 2 a.m. in the area of 143rd and A streets, Troyer said.  Deputies found shell casings on the street.

The 22-year-old driver was wounded in the incident.

The second shooting occurred about 9:15 p.m. Thursday. Neighbors in the 11900 block of Vickery Avenue East called 911 to report hearing gunshots, Troyer said.

Deputies arrived and found a 29-year-old man who had been shot in the head and face. The man was not able to talk because of his injuries but was nonetheless uncooperative, Troyer said.

“He stuck his middle finger up at us,” he added. “We took that as he’s not going to be cooperative with us.”

While investigating, detectives have learned of another man who’d been shot in the arm sometime late Wednesday or early Thursday. They didn’t know if the man was wounded during the shooting involving the two women or in a separate incident.

The man received treatment at a local hospital and was released before deputies were called, Troyer said. Detectives have a street name for him but have not been able to find him.

“He doesn’t want to be found,” Troyer said.

The victims have not been forthcoming with information about why they were shot, where and by whom, Troyer said. Nonetheless, investigators believe they know who’s responsible. They identified Young as a suspect with the help of their crime analysis unit and by looking at associates of the victims, Troyer said.

“We need to work to get this guy pulled off the streets before someone else gets hurt or killed,” Troyer said. “We are considering him to be very, very dangerous.”

Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to Young’s arrest. Tipsters may remain anonymous.
