Heavy overnight rains caused an embankment to come crashing down on part of Vashon Highway early Sunday, according to the King County Department of Transportation.

Downed trees and other debris are blocking the highway between Southwest Burton Drive and 115th Avenue Southwest.

The mudslide occurred just before 3 a.m.

It’s unknown when the main highway will reopen. Motorists are encouraged to use Southwest Burton Drive, 107th Avenue Southwest, Southwest 232nd Street to Wax Orchard Road Southwest as a detour route.

Within a 24-hour period that ended at 5 a.m., meteorologists said 1.49 inches of rain fell in the area.
