Tacoma police have arrested a man suspected of setting fire to his girlfriend’s parents’ South Tacoma home last month.

Prosecutors on Wednesday charged James F. Patterson, 25, with first-degree arson, first-degree residential burglary and first-degree trafficking in stolen property. He was being held in Pierce County Jail on suspicion of $150,000 bail.

Flames burned the home in the 5600 block of South Verde Street the morning of Sept. 26. No one was inside at the time. Investigators discovered several starting points for the fire in the home.

Through the investigation, detectives discovered Patterson was living with the homeowners’ daughter. He was suspected of stealing property from the home earlier this year, court documents state.

Witnesses spotted the daughter’s car at the South Verde Street the morning of the fire. The daughter told investigators Patterson had borrowed the car twice that morning. Investigators also learned that Patterson had pawned several items last month and earlier this month.

After his arrest, Patterson denied that he was involved in the arson or stealing televisions from the South Verde Street home.
