A Pierce County jury on Wednesday convicted a suspected member of the Hilltop Crips street gang of attempted first-degree murder in a shooting that left a man paralyzed.
Deondre L. Posey, 23, faces a maximum sentence of 39 years, three months in prison when sentenced Oct. 22, deputy prosecutor Phil Sorensen said today. He also was convicted of unlawfully possessing a firearm.
Prosecutors contended Posey shot a man Sept. 9, 2009, in the 1400 block of South M Street. Fellow Crips were angry with the victim because they’d heard he’d made derogatory remarks about them and may have been dealing drugs on their turf, court records state.
The man is paralyzed from the waist down as a result of his wounds.
Posey was one of 36 suspected members or associated of the Hilltop Crips swept up in February during a law-enforcement crackdown on the gang.
More than half have been convicted of various crimes. Several more are either on trial or scheduled to start trial next week.
