The first carpool lane on Interstate 5 in Pierce County could open as soon as Saturday, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The three-mile section of northbound roadway extends from Wapato Creek, just north of Port of Tacoma Road, to the King County Line. There it will join with an existing HOV system.

The $35.3 million project is intended to make commutes faster for transit and carpools.

Crews are doing last minute preparation work for the opening, including sign installation and striping.

Inclement weather could delay the opening, WSDOT said.

A southbound carpool lane in the same area is being constructed from the King County Line to 54th Avenue East. It is scheduled to open by late October.
