WHAT WAS THAT: Attempted burglary at Ruston Way restaurant

A reader e-mailed in wanting to know what the commotion was about 2:30 a.m. this morning.

Do you know what’s going on on the Ruston Way waterfront?  There’s been several police cars out there for almost 2 hours.  There’s a couple of police with flashing lights parked out somewhere near Harbor Lights restaurant (I think, it’s awfully dark out there) and then 4-5 police cars at Ruston Wy/McCarver near the Fish Market/Cafe.

Turns out it was an attempted burglary. Here’s what police had to say:

A burglar alarm at Northern Fish, 2201 Ruston Way, sounded about 2:25 a.m. today. When officers responded, they noticed an exterior door was open, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

The officers heard a noise coming from under the business, which is on pilings. About that time, a vehicle drove into the parking lot. A man climbed up the rocks from the beach and ran to the car. The car sped off.

An officer responding to the area spotted the fleeing vehicle and stopped it a few blocks away, Fulghum said. Two men were taken into custody and booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of burglary.
