UPDATE: The teen has been taken into custody.

A negotiator struck a pact with him to put his gun down and walk forward to speak with a family member. When the alleged gunman was about five yards from the semi-automatic weapon, sheriff’s SWAT members moved in and arrested him.

“This proves that having a well-trained personnel and patience and putting a plan into place works and saved a life tonight,” said Sheriff Paul Pastor.

The teen was taken to a hospital to be checked out for a possible overdose on prescription pills. He will then be booked into jail and receive a medical evaluation.

UPDATE: A SWAT stand-off with a Parkland teen who allegedly shot his mom continues after two hours.

The teen is standing in his front yard holding a semi-automatic handgun. Detectives are interviewing his dad and sister, who are standing behind a sheriff’s patrol car about a block away. The teen’s mother was shot in the leg and is expected to survive.

“Right now he’s alternating putting the gun to his head and putting it down to the ground,” said sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer. “He’s emotionally distraught.”

The events leading up to the 4:30 p.m. shooting remain unknown.

After the teen threw down the cell phone he’d been speaking with negotiators on, negotiators turned to a loud speaker in an attempt to reconnect with the alleged shooter.

PREVIOUS POST: Sheriff’s detectives said they are negotiating with a 17-year-old who allegedly shot his mother and is still armed outside their Parkland home.

The shooting was reported about 4:30 p.m. at a home near Sheridan Avenue South and 106th Street South.

“We have him cornered near a picnic table and he’s still armed with a handgun,” said sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer. “There’s a ton of people around so it’s a dangerous situation.”

The boy’s dad is safe and his mom is en route to St. Clare Hospital. Her condition is unknown.

If this were SPD, he’d be dead!

  2. If the kid had a knife they would have shot him.

Why do parents have guns in their homes where children have access to them? I fail to understand this. The mentally ill teen in our life pulled knives on us once, but we got them from her. She continues to be completely mentally ill and we have no idea why. Sometimes bad things happen to good people. She comes from solid family on both sides- seven lawyers, a speech patholgogist grandmother, nurse aunt, retired judge grandfather, nice things in her nice home, and yet she has dropped out of high school since age 14, does drugs, hangs out with drug dealers, puts obscene photos of herself all over the Internet…..I am so glad I never had children. I could not have handled the heartbreak of it.
