A 55-year-old man was killed Tuesday night when he was run over by a runaway backhoe as he cleared property east of Renton, the King County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Sheriff’s deputies were called about 5:30 p.m. to the 11900 block of 171st Place Southeast.

Investigators believe the Seattle man was clearing property when a tie rod broke and damaged the backhoe, deputies reported. The man got the machine onto 171st Place Southeast but “the tie rod ended up stuck in the ground like a kickstand,” deputies reported.

“The man kicked the tie rod loose and the backhoe started rolling downhill,” a press release stated.

The man ran alongside the machine and tried to reach the controls. He slipped and was run over.

Paramedics took the man to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He died about 7 p.m.

The Sheriff’s Office was investigating.
