Pacific Highway has reopened to traffic, the Federal Way Police Department reported.
UPDATE: Puget Sound Energy crews were able to stop the gas leak about 12:30 p.m.
However, Federal Way High School has canceled all after-school and home athletic events scheduled for today. Repairs to the broken gas main have required that power and telephones to the high school be shut off. Away games will be held as scheduled, the district reported.
Meanwhile, businesses east of Pacific Highway between 308th and 310th Street were evacuated, Federal Way police reported. No homes or apartments were evacuated.
Crews are at the scene of a natural gas leak in Federal Way.
A construction company cut through a 4-inch gas line at 308th Street South and Pacific Highway South, Puget Sound Energy reports. Pacific Highway is closed in both directions from 304th Street to 312th Street South as crews work to stop the leak, the Federal Way Police Department reported.
The highway could be closed for two hours. Drivers are encouraged to use Interstate 5 or Military Road as an alternative.
South King County Fire crews and police officers are evacuating nearby businesses. At this time, nearby Federal Way High School is not being evacuated.The wind is blowing away from the school, the school district reported.
Utility crews are on scene. No injuries have been reported.
