King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg will seek the death penalty against the man accused of shooting two Seattle police officers – killing one of them – last Halloween, the Seattle Times reports here.

The announcement was made this morning during a court hearing for Christopher Monfort, 41.

Monfort has been charged with aggravated first-degree murder in the shooting death of Seattle police officer Timothy Brenton and attempted first-degree murder in the wounding of officer Britt Sweeney. The two officers were sitting in a parked patrol car the night of Oct. 31 when, prosecutors allege, Monfort drove up next to them and opened fire. Sweeney suffered minor injuries.

The slaying was the first in a series of deadly incidents involving Puget Sound law enforcement late last year.

Less than a month later, four Lakewood police officers were gunned down in a Parkland coffee shop as they prepared for their Sunday morning shift. Sgt. Mark Renninger and officers Tina Griswold, Ronald Owens and Greg Richards were killed in the Nov. 29 attack.

Then, in late December, two Pierce County sheriff’s deputies were shot during an exchange of gunfire with a man they were trying to remove from a home near Eatonville. Deputy Kent Mundell died of his injuries a week after the Dec. 21 shootout; Sgt. Nick Hausner was injured but has since recovered and returned to duty.

It’s about time we go back to a law, I know we had once upon a time, that if you kill an officer, fireman or medic, you get the death penalty. Time has come to stand up like humans and protect OUR protectors. I am so fed up with the killing and it is time to take a stand against murder. Yup, I am one of those lousy “liberals” (whatever that means) and I am for stronger laws and no pot laws as they are taking space we need for real criminals. NO, am not a pot smoker either (sorry, not sure which party this “vile” crime is suppose to belong to).
Yes, I HAVE dealt with poor officers, SO WHAT! I don’t blame all officer for one just like I would never blame a crime on one color, one religion, one sex. Grow up and let’s get these people off the street and GONE.

  3. Everybody,,

Washington State tied their hands as far as actually carrying out a capital punishment sentence. After we struck that deal with Gary Ridgeway, there is no way we could justify putting anjyone down after that plea bargin. That is just my two cent worth.

I am also a Liberal who is strongly in favor of tougher laws and less silly loopholes for Defense attorneys to exploit(i.e. The “double jeopardy” clause) and I also favor Capital punishment for murderers and such. And I also support the legalization of drugs(whether I do them or not) because prohibition has NEVER worked and we do not need to add to our national debt.

Maybe our state should shadow Texas revolving death penalty door. Even with a death sentence just look at State Supreme Courts over turning of death sentences and trials. He’ll never get death sentence served. So much for justice.

I would gladly volunteer to hang this waste of a human. He deserves to die.
