Tacoma police arrested a man Sunday afternoon after he allegedly shoplifted from an East Side convenience store, then led officers on a high-speed chase.

The incident began about 3 p.m. The suspect went into the 7-Eleven at East 38th Street and McKinley Avenue and shoplifted items, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.

A confrontation ensued inside the store. The suspect fled in a vehicle as a Tacoma police sergeant pulled into the parking lot.

The sergeant and other officers pursued the man, Fulghum said. The suspect hit a Tacoma police cruiser after taking a corner too fast. The police car was not heavily damaged.

A short time later, the man bailed out of his car and fled on foot. Officers took him into custody a short time later, Fulghum said.

Further investigation revealed the car the man had been driving had been stolen earlier Sunday.

Tacoma police officers booked the man into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of first-degree robbery, first-degree assault, possession of stolen property, felony eluding and possession of burglary tools.
